Diane takes place as ’inspirational‘ finalist
Pools Plus from Maidenhead had a special reason to be proud of their staff when their Team Manager Diane Allaway won through to the finals in the Inspiration of the Year Award category, sponsored by MasterCard Worldwide.
Diane worked in retail and customer service at Asda before moving to Nationwide Building Society. She joined Pools Plus working part time on Sundays as a sales assistant before joining full time as Team Manager, when the opportunity arose – an offer she could not refuse. As well as looking after staff welfare she also acts as finance controller taking care of cash flow and the pay roll. She realises that people are individual, the need to understand each person and address them the way to which they will respond the best. She has found the economic climate tough, having had to steer the company through it through forward planning for the worst as well as making the most of resources.
She is satisfied that she has reached her goal of being on a board of directors; she was inspired having been brought up in family that worked in retail. She is inspired by the phrase, ‘You’re entitled to change your mind’ in both her personal life and at work as well as her longest friend of 36 years whom she still sees every week and is proud of the work-life balance that she has achieved.
“You can achieve what you want through loyalty, both loyalty to people and loyalty to yourself.”
The Specsavers everywoman in Retail Awards were established to help readdress the gender balance in management roles within retail by highlighting role models and their various accomplishments, many of which would otherwise go unnoticed.
Maxine Benson MBE, Co-founder and Director of everywoman said: “With the UK coming out of recession, it is important to champion the women that possess the skills to ensure organisations can continue to thrive. Through highlighting the female stars in the sector, these awards prove to other women that retail is a viable and rewarding career option.”
