Showrooms prepare for health officer visits after legionella death
Hot tub showrooms throughout the UK have been warned of more visits from Environmental Health officers following a high profile summer death from Legionnaires disease.
There were also 18 further cases in the Stoke on Trent legionella infection incident.
A hot tub displayed in a store in the town is thought to be the "probable" source after samples from it were found to match those taken from the patients.
BISHTA technical advisor Howard Gosling is already in discussions with the Health Protection Agency (HPA) to determine what lessons are to be learnt from the outbreak.
Trade association BISHTA has reminded members of the need to have industry publications, such as Management of Spa Pools and L8 in each showroom.
The other message to go out from the specialist hot tub industry is that proper procedures for running and maintaining a hot tub will eliminate any threat from diseases such as legionnaires.
Cleaning and maintaining the hot tub regularly is the only way to ensure that bacteria do not concentrate in the water and the spray.
As a result, the HPA has produced a guidance leaflet on how to clean hot tubs and spa pools with chemicals which disinfect the water.
Local authorities will carry out detailed inspections throughout August and September.
BISHTA has also stressed the importance of having Risk Assessment for Legionella Control which is available as a BSi Standard (BS 8580:2010 Risk Assessments for Legionella Control). "As a reminder to members, it is essential that risk assessments are undertaken, together with the appropriate training and both of these need to be kept up to date".
Generally legionella multiplies in hot tubs when people fail to operate or maintain hot tub correctly. Proper operation should always include the use of chemicals. The unit should not be run using untreated tap water. Proper maintenance includes not only treating the water but also shutting down the unit weekly to scrub away any biofilm deposits on the sides of the unit and cleaning/replacing the filters. The unit should then be refilled using tap water treated with the correct dosing of chemicals.
