Tollcross International Swimming Centre Opens After £13.8m Refurbishment
Tollcross International Swimming Centre (TISC) in Glasgow has opened its doors to the public after an extensive £13.8m extension and refurbishment by Barr Construction.

The venue will host the swimming events during the 2014 Commonwealth Games and includes a new look 10-lane 50-metre competition pool and a completely new six-lane 50-metre warm-up pool, creating one of the largest facilities of its kind in Europe.

An extra 1,000 permanent seats have been added to the 1,000 which were in place prior to Barr commencing the 19-month construction programme in October 2011.

A further 3,000 temporary seats will be in place during the Games. The project was funded by Glasgow City Council (£13.15m) and sportscotland (£650,000).

The refurbished venue will also operate as a community sports facility giving local people access to a world-class leisure offering.

As well as the pool improvements, Barr has doubled the size of the fitness suite at the Glasgow Club Tollcross – a central part of TISC – and has installed new flooring in the sports halls.

Barr also created a new community facility to replace the fire-damaged Shettleston Burgh Halls which features a public hall, function rooms, dance studio, dressing room, community hall concourse, toilets and storage.

Managing Director at Barr Construction, Barclay Chalmers, said: "Given its significance both to the local community in Glasgow and to the 2014 Commonwealth Games, we were aware of the importance of delivering a facility the city could be proud of.

"The whole project team has worked tremendously hard to create the new Tollcross International Swimming Centre and we are confident it will be used and enjoyed by local and elite swimmers for many years to come."

TISC will host a world-class events programme including the swimming competition at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2015 IPC World Swimming Championships. The venue is also at the heart of the city’s bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, where it will host both the swimming and diving competitions. The first event to be held at TISC will be the Scottish Open Swimming Championships taking place 13 - 16 June this year.

Chair of Glasgow Life and the Executive Member for the Commonwealth Games, Councillor Archie Graham, said: “The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will leave a lasting legacy of new and improved sports venues for the people of Glasgow and Tollcross International Swimming Centre is right at the very heart of this programme.

"As well as the refurbished competition pool area and new warm-up pool, the facilities at Tollcross will include one of the biggest and best equipped Glasgow Clubs gyms in the city, adding to the fantastic fitness centres already available in the Glasgow Club network.

"These facilities will be used on a daily basis by the local community giving people of all ages and abilities the chance to swim and train in a world-class venue. The wait is over, Tollcross is ready."
