Calorex In ‘Pool’ Position
The owners of an award-winning refurbished swimming pool in Kent are enjoying significant energy savings following the installation of a Calorex Pro-Pac heat pump.
Recognised as one of the most sustainable way to dynamically heat swimming pool water, a Calorex Pro-Pac 22Y unit was chosen for the project by Bespoke Swimming Pools to keep energy and operating costs to a minimum.
“The customer wanted a concrete pool to replace the old, tired unusable liner pool that was already in place,” explained Tony Keogh of Bespoke Swimming Pools.
“Efficiency was a top priority, which is why we opted for a top spec Calorex heat pump. You really do get what you pay for with Calorex and I’ve always found the products and service to be extremely reliable.”
Designed and manufactured in the UK under ISO9001 compliance, the highly innovative Pro-Pac heat pumps are specifically designed for swimming pool heating and are capable of providing a pool with up to five units of absorbed heat for every one unit paid for.
Graham Kneale, H&V Field Sales Manager at Certikin, Calorex’s UK distributor, explained: “In the summer, the heat pump will work at a coefficient of performance (COP) of about 5:1, which means that heat goes into the pool at one fifth of the price of standard rate electricity. Typically, electricity is 12.5p/kWh so heat goes into the pool at 2.5p/kWh.”
“Gas is currently priced at 4.6p/kWh, which after allowing for the energy efficiency of the boiler, the heat pump will heat the pool for about half the cost of gas in summer.”
Graham added: “In winter, Calorex heat pumps fall to a COP of about 3:1, making the heat into the pool at about 4.2 p/kWh – still lower than heating with gas.”
Pro-Pac X heat pumps are ideal for outdoor pool heating or pools with a semi-permanent enclosure to extend the useable period of a normal outdoor pool, when temperatures are above 5°C. Whereas Pro-Pac Y pumps are suited to heating indoor or outdoor pools all year round and can operate in temperatures as low as -15°C.
The project by Bespoke Swimming Pools scooped a Gold standard accolade at the UK Pool & Spa Awards and was praised by the judges in the Residential Refurbishment of the Year category, for its aesthetic design and energy efficient credentials.
