Restored South Coast Lido Opens This Weekend
Saltdean Lido is one of the finest remaining examples of modernist lidos in the UK and was saved by local residents who set up a Community Interest Company and successfully secured a 60-year lease from Brighton & Hove City Council (the freeholders) to operate the lido site.
The vision was to bring the building, swimming pool and grounds back into use for local residents and visitors by creating a range of all-year round vibrant amenities.
Work on rebuilding the main swimming pool and children's paddling pool started in September 2015 and after many challenging months, the opening of the pools takes place tomorrow, Saturday 17 June.
Featuring heated water for the first time since the original pool closed in 1940, the main pool has also been returned back to 40m in length.
The completed facilities will open every weekend, however from the 8 July, the site will be open daily until 17 September. As well as swimming, there will also be a range of events and activities taking place this Summer.
Saturday’s opening concludes the first phase of a two-part renovation project. Phase 2 (subject to funding) will see the main building restored back to its former glory with a cafe/restaurant/events space, community spaces and library (subject to funding from the council).
It is anticipated if funding is secured Spring 2017 that the building will re-open by 2020.
