North Ridge Pumps Solve Issues At Hydrotherapy Pool
Established in 1998, North Ridge Pumps are an independent manufacturer and distributor of pumps and have a wealth of experience in pumping applications.

So when they were contacted recently by a hydrotherapy centre that was experiencing problems with their existing swimming pool pumps, they knew that their 20 years of experience would assist in providing a solution. The pool’s centrifugal pumps were failing frequently, and this was disrupting the daily activities of the centre’s clients. They also had far higher energy costs than were anticipated when the pumps were originally installed.

After discussions with the customer and an assessment, it was discovered that the pumps were cavitating as they were oversized and running off this curve. This was consequently leading to frequent and costly repairs. The mechanical seal was failing, the impeller was severely damaged and the motors were overheating. Quite often the repair costs were as high as purchasing a complete new replacement. As the pumps and motors were oversized and running off curve, the power absorbed was significantly higher than it should have been and therefore the energy costs were astronomical!

The three installed pumps were fitted with 5.5kW motors and running several hours a day at full speed. After inspection it was ascertained that the pumps needed to be downsized and that 3kW motors were enough for when the pumps needed to run at maximum capacity.

North Ridge Pumps therefore selected three of their 40m³/hr NR-FGRT-GNT-127 pumps fitted with 3kW motors suitable for operation by an external inverter. By running the pumps via an inverter, they only operate at the speed necessary to perform the flow rate and pressure at any given time. Running pumps at full speed continuously when not required can lead to significantly higher energy costs.

The solution not only reduced energy costs for the customer dramatically, but as the pumps are running on their performance curve and not cavitating, repair costs and downtime are now only required during standard maintenance schedules.
