Olympics minister opens £25m Harlow sports centre
Harlow Leisurezone, the jewel in the crown of Harlow’s Gateway Project, was officially opened by Minister for Sport and the Olympics, Hugh Robertson MP on Tuesday 25 January 2011.
The £25m sports centre in Essex comprises a 25m eight-lane swimming pool, fitness rooms, tennis and squash courts and a gymnasium. It provides the town’s first combined ‘wet and dry’ leisure centre, setting new standards for accessible, high-quality and integrated sports and leisure provision in the region.
A spokesman said it was set to attract 600,000 visitors in its first year. It opened its doors to the public in June 2010.
Mr Robertson said: "It is up there with the best and will be well used by the community for years to come."
The event marked the culmination of many years of vision, passion, commitment and dedication from the Gateway Partnership – a partnership between Harlow Council, the Harlow and District Sports Trust and the Homes and Communities Agency supported by Government, the East of England Development Agency, the MP and local groups to provide much needed homes and modern leisure facilities for the town.
The opening of the old Harlow Sportcentre in1959 broke new ground with the establishment of a Charitable Trust to manage and operate the centre. In 1959 setting up a Leisure Trust was an innovative venture, and its success meant it was subsequently copied by Councils across the UK. The Charity established was called Harlow & District Sports Trust, which now manages and operates Harlow Leisurezone.
“I applaud the Harlow Gateway Partnership for their hard work on this impressive new sports facility that will sit at the heart of the community. As we get ever closer to London 2012, I hope that the sporting opportunities on offer at Harlow Leisurezone will inspire people to get active and take up new and exciting sports,” said Mr Robertson.
